Census on the Platte River during the
1 O-year period (1988 to 1997) annually reported between 450 and 700 adult least terns (Table
4-1).

Locations of known nesting habitat appear to be available from annual monitoring and will be
provided in Appendix A when it has been compiled by FWS. Location and quantification of
potential nesting areas may be approximated by mapped locations of the beacb/bar cover type in
the BOR GIS database, but the adequacy of using these data will need to be evaluated when the
data are available.

Annual adult least tern surveys provide a generally adequate baseline for assessing charges in
population size and distribution during the breeding season. They may not support more detailed
monitoring of population size or structure. For example, data have been recorded as numbers of
birds and not breeding p::1irs_

,1
1
,1
I

4.6 SUITABILITY OF THE EXISTING BASELINE FOR MONITORING

\

NPPD data provides an adequate baseline for assessment of reproductive success, including
number of nests, nest fates, and fledging rates, at the NPPD managed and monitored sites.
Comparable data are not available for most unmanaged nesting sites, except for some specific
research studies. These unmanaged areas are likely to have lower reproductive success.

There are few data on chick and adult survivorship and return rates. The Chadwick and
Associates, Inc. 1990-1995 fish data provide an adequate baseline for monitoring of forage fish.

4- I 0 ".OC972ll6OOh1.<loC 6/2t1999l'oS2 AM)lURSGWC.S12

_ tniBtJI' tIIlN~ t:IJIIe
FetlInI SerrIces
