A con.
crele-arch dam, it stores water in Lake Powell. the
reservoir created by the dam. to meet downstream com-
mibnents. Controlled releases of water through the
giant turbines generale great amounts of hydroelectric
power, which is then used by ciUes and industries in the
Intermountain West. The revenue from CRSP hydro-
power nol only repays the cost of Glen Canyon Dam, but
also helps pay for the many Federal Reclamation projects
in the Upper Basin of the Colorado River. These water
projects, which irrigate the land and supply municipal
water and other benefits, ore called participating
projects.

The Bureau of Reclarr.alion's Colorado River Storage
Project is one of the most far.reaching examples of
reqionwide water development programs in the United
States. Since it was authorized in 1956, 3 major storage
dams-Glen Canyon, Flaming Gorge, and NavajO--
have been completed. The 3 dams of the Curecanti
Vnl! are now under construction.

By 1966, farmers and ranchers were receiving water
from 6 completed participating projects, and 6 more were
under construction. Additional participating projects
have been authorized and others are in various stages of
investigation to determine their feasibility.

Presently authorized features of the CRSP will cost about
$1 bi]lion. Roughly, 92 percent of the Bureau of Recla-
mation cost will be repaid to the Federa] Treasury,
principally through the sale of CRSP power produced ot
Glen Canyon D:lm and at the other eRgp hydrop]ants.

The ]orge water storage capacity of Lake Powell (27
million acre.feet) permits long-term, cyclical storage and
also can be used to meet downstream waler commitments,
This requlation will permit belter utilization of water in
the upstream basln.

Glen Canyon Dam was built as a beneht toall Americans,
Whether you live in the City or on the farm. using water
made available by the CRSP, or whether you come to
fish, to go b:xJting, or just to sightsee, the Colorado River
Storage Project belongs 10 you and can be enjoyed by you.
lt is on investment in the future 01 America.
