A meeting reviewing the Monitoring Program was held in April 1997 and
. January 1998. Many suggestions were made about possible changes or
additions to the Monitoring Program. Some of these suggested changes are
reflected in the current scope of work. However, many changes and
sampling protocols will need to be revised over the coming year. Initial
sampling protocols have been circulated to monitoring participants or are
incorporated in the scope of work. This information will need to be added to
the ISMP Handbook.

4. Assist states with field work as needed.

Labor or equipment is provided as needed.

5. Produce and distribute an annual consolidated report.

After the data files are completed, the data are analyzed from a basin-wide
perspective. A draft basin-wide report is completed and circulated to
Monitoring Program participants. After comments are received, the annual
report is distributed to the Biology Committee and Monitoring Program
participants.

6. . Conduct subadult-adult Colorado squawfish monitoring in the Colorado
River within the Grand Valley, River Mile 171.0B158.0 (new addition for FY-
98).

Shoreline electrofishing will be conducted according to the ISMP protocol.
Both shorelines will be sampled for the entire length of the reach. All
species encountered will be collected, identified, measured and counted in 3
of the 13 miles electrofished. Only Colorado squawfish and other species of
special concern will be captured and counted in the remaining 10 miles of
sampling. All Colorado squawfish will be measured (total length, " 1 mm),
weighed (" 20 g) and checked for the presence of a PIT tag. Untagged fish
will be tagged with a uniquely numbered PIT tag. All Colorado squawfish
will be released alive near their point of capture.

Sampling will be conducted every spring, before the peak of runoff, until the
Monitoring Program is modified or terminated.

7. Conduct humpback chub monitoring/population estimate in Black Rocks
(expanded program for FY-98).

Conduct at least three (maximum of four) intensive 4-day (3 nights)

3
