hybridization.

V. Study area (river miles, if appropriate): This study will be conducted
at Wahweap State Fish Hatchery or another state facility.

VI. Study Methods/Approach:

PHASE I: F~ VIABILITY

We propose producing 49 F, paired crosses (Table 1). Seventeen paired
matings will produce pure Gila offspring. Thirty-two paired matings, will
produce hybrids between the Gila species. All matings will be held in
separate tanks or marked as individual family lots.

Table 1. All possible crosses (N=49) using replicates to estimate among-male
and among-female variance (B= Bony tail, H= Humpback, R= Rountail).

Male

F

Bl B2 B3 HI H2 Rl R2
Bl BlxBl B2xBl B3xBl HlxBl H2xBl RlxBl R2xBl
B2 BlxB2 B2xB2 B3xB2 HlxB2 H2xB2 RlxB2 R2xB2
B3 BlxB3 B2xB3 B3xB3 HlxB3 H2xB3 RlxB3 R2xB3
HI BlxHl B2xHl B3xHl HlxHl H2xHl RlxHl R2xHl
H2 BlxH2 B2xH2 B3xH2 HlxH2 H2xH2 RlxH2 R2xH2
.'
Rl BlxRl B2xRl B3xRl HlxRl H2xRl RlxRl R2xRl
R2 BlxR2 B2xR2 B3xR2 HlxR2 H2xR2 RlxR2 R2xR2

e

m

a

1

e

Transport adults to facility

During the fall-spring of the first study year, adult Gila will be obtained
from hatchery facilities or collected. We foresee using Gila cypha from
Horsethief or the wild, adult Gila elegaDs from Dexter, and collecting adult
Gila robusta from opper Basin rivers. We have the opportunity to collect wild
adult humpback chub from Westwater Canyon at the same time roundtail chub are
collected if the Program so desires. The humpback.chub could be held at
Wahweap if pond space is limiting at other facilities. .

Paired matings

Adults from each Gila spp. will be used for the crosses in the spring/early
summer of the first and second study years. The laboratory facilities at UDWR
Wahweap State Fish Hatchery will be used for all possible crosses between
Giia. Crosses within pure species will serve as controls (Table 1).
Approximately 500-1000 eggs from each female will be fertilized (a single male
will be used for each female). These eggs will be placed in hatching jars and
subsequently aquariums.

3
