4' () 1S 3 FIlYINGPAN-ARKANSAS PROJICCT, COLORADO

lii1(ty, hardness, and turbidity. Transmountain diversion is the only
source or allY appreciable amount of WI1.tcr to meet the municipal
needs unless'the already short agricultnral water supply is di\'erted
to municipal use, thus further djsruptul~ the agricultural economy
of the orea. The new supply from the .r'ryingpan-Arkltnsas projed
would go a long way towll.rd inlproving the Witter quality and meeting
the critical need (or ndditional municipal water.
Flood con trol is a very importan t aspect, of the Fryingpan-Arkansas
project. Floods in the upper Arkansas River Valley annually
threaten the los8 of property and discourage investment. Damaging
floods occur almost every year. Tlw worst flood on record occurred
in 192] when at least 78 persons lost their livcs and property damage
exceeded $]\) million, There has heen some improvement along tlte
lower Arkansas River due to construction of the John Martin Rcser-
voir ill 1949, but the flood danger still exists upstream, particularly
between Puehlo and (,he John Martin Reservoir. The Fryingpan-
Arkansas project would prevent a large part of the /load damages
that occur annually along that stretch of th8 river.
The needs for eJertric power and eaergy in the project area are
expanding rapidly, and increased demands ar8 overtaxing existing
facilities. The additional supplies of electric power and energy from
the Fryingpau-ArkanslIS project will help meet tbese evrr-increasing
demands.
