Bureau of Mines
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers

This environmental impact statement analyzes the environmental
effects of alternatives under consideration to develop land and water
resources along the lower Gunnison River, Mesa and Delta Counties,
Colorado to meet future energy, water, and recreational needs. Alter-
natives assessed include plans stressing development of peaking power,
plans for municipal and industrial water development, and plans to meet
environmental needs. Four candidate plans and a future without the
project scenario are analyzed in detail. The plans consist of a multi-
purpose plan with peaking power, a plan to meet long-term municipal and
industrial water supplies, a plan to meet environmental needs, and a
nonstructural plan to meet local water needs. Plans involving reservoir
construction would inundate riparian wildlife habitat, farmland, and
cultural re'source sites. Wildlife mitigation, fishery enhancement, and
c~ltural resource plans are included in the candid~te plans.
