.

.'

1209

III. LAND CLASSIFICATION

The land classification system is based on the Administrative Policies
Handbook (NPS-2, 1975) and is applied as follows, identifying current
uses and management practices within the monument:

A. Natural Zo~e - The majority of monument lands (approximately 90%) is
classified and managed as a natural zone and the resources and processes
will remain unaltered by human activity.

1. Wilderness Subzone - The area identified as wilderness subzone
consists of 165,341 acres and represents approximately 80% of the
monument area. This area is proposed as a wilderness area and is
presently managed to protect its wilderne'ss values. An additional
10,274 acres are proposed as Potential Wilderness Additions.

2. Outstanding Natural Feature Subzone - Thl~ area is located at the
Quarry site and consists of the most significant paleontological
remains of the monument. It is therefore being managed as a
feature of intrinsic value and is provided for visitor access
without impairing its quality.

3. Natural Environment Subzone - There are several areas within the
monument that are managed to provide for environmentally compatible
recreational activities protective of these natural areas.

B. Special Use Zone - The activities that are managed within this zone
consist of private or state land inholdings which contain residences, out-
buildings, farmland and grazing operations.

The amount of area involved consists of approximately 6,231.76 acres and
they are primarily located at Rainbow Park, Island Park, and Zenobia Peak.

C. Development Zone - These zones represent areas within the monument
that have been developed to serve the needs of the monument management and
large numbers of visitors. There are approximately 915 acres involved and
they consist of the following areas:

Quarry Development
Split Mountain Campground
Gates of Lodore
Headquarters Area
Echo Park
Deer Lodge Park
Green River Campground

105 acres
45 acres
40 acres
450 acres
140 acres
90 acres
45 acres

The major developed areas are the Quarry development, which accommodates
a visitor center, residences and maintenance facilities; and the headquarters
area, which accommodates the administrative offices, residences and
maintenance facilities.

SFM-3
