I)D12~3

.

CHAPTER IV

IMPROVEMENT AND EXTENSION

The reservoir storage capacity required for regulation of irrigation
supplies would be about 10,000 acre-feet with a water surface area
of 320 acres. The dam would be a rolled-earth structure with a
height of 100 feet, a crest length of 1,580 feet, and'a volume of
1,200,000 cubic yards. Both the spillway and outlet works would be
located on the left abutment of the dam with respective capacities
of 1,000 and 400 c.f.s. Bedrock of the Dakota and Morrison formations
is exposed on both abutments but the depth of streamfill and other
overburden materials across the valley bottom has not been determined.
Because examination of the stream channel at the site indicates that
the overburden materials are over 20 feet in depth, some dam foundation
problems are expected. During feasibility studies needs for additional
capacity for other purposes such as fish and wildlife, recreation, and
flood control would be considered cooperatively with other federal and
state agencies.

.

Major Diversion and Conveyance Structures
Three diversion dams would be completely replaced under the
improvement plan. These structures ate located at the Gunnison Tunnel
diversion on the Gunnison River, the East Canal diversion on the
Uncompahgre River, and the diversion for the Montrose and Delta Canal
from Coal Creek. Work on other diversion structures would include
replacement of the overflow spillway and sluiceway portions of
Loutzenhizer diversion structure on the Uncompahgre River and the
headworks structure for the Garnet Canal on the same stream,

Reaches of deteriorated lining estimated to total 1,000 feet
would be replaced in 5 tunnels along South Canal, and the invert
lining of a l,730-foot tunnel on West Canal would be removed and
replaced at a lower elevation to increase the capacity of the tunnel.

Ten existing flumes and 3 existing siphons along project canal
and laterals would be replaced The siphons would be replaced with
the same type of structure, but 5 of the existing flumes would be
replaced as siphons. All of the new structures would be ot concrete
construction_

The locations of the diversion structures, flumes and siphons to
be replaced or partially reconstructed are identified on the frontis-
piece map and are also shown on the map on the following page. Addi-
tional data on the tunnels, siphons, and flumes involved in the
replacement work are included in the tabulation on page 49.

46

.
