1941

As small family farmers, we are disappearing from the landscape. Only 2% of the
population in the United States is involved in farming today. Despite a myth left over
from the days when the majority of people. in the United States were farmers, we have
almost no political power today. Our survival depends on our being heard, understood
and supported by our urban neighbors.

If we continue to disappear, with us will go the diversity, alternatives and
choices that rural communities provide. Once such places are gone, they are gone
forever. No one would advocate the return to an agrarian society, but just as
protection of biodiversity ensures the sustainability of our planet, protection of
rural, family-centered lifestyles and diverse community structures can help to ensure
the health and sustainability of our nation. Such communities give us all choices.

367

-
