All generators have a

variable output ranging between 5 and 40 grams of AgI per hour. Tests

have shown each gram of seeding material capable of producing approximately
1015 effective ice nuclei at -20C. The times, rates, and generators to

be used are specified by the licensed operators from the operational

cloud seeding firms. The local operator of the generator is then tele-

phoned and given directions on the operation of the generator desired

for that day. Each local operator keeps a log and reports back to the

commercial seeding firm what operation actually took place.

An aircraft has also been contracted to seed the northern Front

Range during upslope (east wind) snow storms. The plane is a twin

engine Piper Navajo with a single ice nucleus generator mounted on the

belly of the plane. This generator burns the same solution as the

northern ground based seeding generators with a constant output of 2

gal. per hour. It was contracted to seed during the months of November,

December, March, and April.

D. Operational Sequence

A typical day in the operational seeding program begins with Western
Weather Consultants making their weather forecast for the day. Most of

the data used for this forecast is that available from the National

Weather Service. This data is routinely received at their forecasting

center in Durango, and it is also provided to the technical coordinator

through the CSU Atmospheric Science Department.
