1

,
.

003352

What Data is Used for Planning and Conducting the Cloud Seeding Operations?

The primary source of data is that available from the National Weather

Service. This is provided on a continuous basis to the cloud seeding

center of Western Weather, Inc. in Durango (similar data is available to

the weather modification coordinator through the CSU Atmospheric Science

Department). Supplemental measurement8 of upper air conditions are provided

to the weather modification companies as part of the state weather modifica-

tion program. The sites for these observations are at Craig and Durango

and they supplement National Weather Service sites (only two) at Grand

Junction and Denver. The supplemental sites can take upper soundings

as required for the program rather than just at the 5 am and the 5 pm

observations of the National Weather Service. The analysis of the

program's upper air soundings are made through a link with the computer

processing facilities of the Bureau of Reclamation in Denver.

What is being Done to Monitor the Seeding Materials After Thev are Released?

Monitoring of artifical seeding materials released is being carried

out on a modest scale by the Atmospheric Science Department of CSU. This

includes measurements designed to detect artificial seeding materials

coming into the state from Utah as well as those released by the Colorado

program. Mountain slope measurements are being made at three sites with

ice nculei counters. These can detect natural ice nuclei concentrations

and the much higher values associated.with seeding materials. Measurements

were made at a fourth site with a portable system during February in

connection with other Colorado State University field research. Additionally,

aircraft observations of ice nuclei have been made both as. part of the

7
