0016J5

3&.1--7

WATER INFORMATION MANAGEMENT SYSTEM HANDBOOK

Step 8 - Using the area, elevation or characteristics data produced in
step 4 and the relations developed in steps 5 and 7, .QB is calculated
for the point(s) of quantification (Gold Creek):

DA = 42.4 mi2
E = 9.6 (thousands of
feet)

WB . 227.8DAO.52E-l.89
a 227.8(42.4)0.52(9.6)-1.89
= 22.2 ft

QB = 6.53WA.07
= 6.53(22.2)1.07
= 180.1 cfs

Step 9 - Proceed to Common Step 1 sec. 36.2, appendix B.

Example - Method D. In this example it is assumed that a request for
lnformatlon has been made by a Congressional Committee. The request seeks
an. approximate figure for total National Forest System channel maintenance
flow requirements within Region 7. The hydrologist for the Many Creeks
National Forest receives the request in mid-winter and is asked to respond
within two weeks.

Researching available data, a small number of gaging stations are found
within or near the National Forest boundaries. A few additional stations
are identified at some distance from the National Forest boundaries but
within a locale having the same hydrophysiographic characteristics.

Considering the time frame, the time of year and the purpose of the
quantification the hydrologist concludes that the analysis must be
completed without the benefit of field data. Further, because of the need
to protect stream reaches potentially suseptible to loss of flow, and the
purpose of the quantification, it is also decided that all channels would
be assumed to be capable of adjustment to frequent flows.

The hydrologist's approach to the project is as follows:

1. The method of choice is Method D.

2. All stations on or within National Forest boundaries would be
used as representative, assuming no significant regulation effects (only
Gander Creek will be used for illustrative purposes).

3. Streams to be quantified would be associated with representative
stations on the basis of proximity as modified by considerations of major
drainage divides, elevation, and similar factors.

ID NO.3
8/28/87
