Colorado farm employment

clearly is declining significantly.

Income

Per capita income in Colorado in 1976 was $6,440, which com-

pares favorably with the national per capita income figure of

$6,396. However, per capita income varies substantially among

different regions of the state. The Platte Region had a per cap-

.ita income of $6,941 in 1976, as compared with only $3,988 in the

Rio Grande Region, and per capita income in the Gunnison and

Southwest Regions was only $4,502 and $4,700, respectively.

On a county-by-county basis even greater discrepancies are

discovered. According to federal figures for 1974, the per cap-

ita income for Pitkin County was $6,660.19 This is 2.74 times

,
....,..'

the figure for Conejos County (2,425), 2.33 times the figure for

Costilla County ($2,860), and 2.04 times the figure for Las Ani-
mas County ($3,271).

Unemployment

The statewide unemployment rate was 5.9 percent in 1976 but

only 3.7 percent in 1978. Again, wide fluctuations occurred from

region to region. The Gunnison Region had a 1976 unemployment

rate of 6.8 percent; the Northern High Plains, 2.3 percent.

19The figures for per capita income or Adjusted Gross Income on a
countywide basis can be skewed in individual years. For example,
in Hinsdale County only 125 state income tax returns were filed
for the calendar year 1978. Given the resulting low denominator,
a few large land sales or abnormally large incomes can result in
per capita figures which are misleading.

19
