001981

CHAPTER 3
COMPUTER BASED MODELING TOOLS

RiverWare

Hydrologic oomputer models are built using either a programming language or a model building tool.
Models built with a programming language such as FORTRAN tend to be site-specific and inflexible.
Modeling tools are usually more general in application and more flexible. RiverWare is one such
tool.

RiverWare Backaround and Description

RiverWare was developed by the Center for Advanced Decision Support (CADSWES) at the
University of Colorado. Major funding was provided by the Bureau of Reclamation and Tennessee
Valley Authority. RiverWare is a generic hydrological modeling tool that utilizes an object-oriented
design and a graphical user interface (GUl) to allow users to develop data-driven, variable time-step
models, for both planning and operational uses. Due to its flexible and extensible design, it can be
customized to fit specialized modeling needs for any river system. One of the many unique features
of RiverWare is its ability to solve a user developed river basin network with different oontrollers or
solution techniques. Currently there are three different oontrollers: simulation, rule-based simulation,
and optimization. RiverWare has been in development since 1993. RiverWare currently runs only on
a Sun Solaris based platform.

A model of a river system network is constructed by placing objects from a palette onto a workspace
using the graphical user interface. Objects in RiverWare represent the features of a river basin. The
following objects are supported by RiverWare since release of version 2.0:

. Storage Reservoir
. Level Power Reservoir
. Slope Power Reservoir
. Pumped Storage Reservoir
. Reach
. Aggregate Reach
. Confluence
. Canal
. Aggregate Diversion
. Aggregate Distribution Canal
. Diversion Object
. Groundwater Storage
. Water User
. Stream Gage
. Thermal Object
.
