<br />001023 <br /> <br />DRAINAGE BASINS AND RUNOFF <br /> <br />" <br /> <br />Dowds Junction is at the confluence of Gore Creek and the Eagle <br /> <br /> <br />River, The Eagle River is trioutary to the Colorado River at Dotsero and <br /> <br /> <br />is the principal drainage in Eagle County, A map of the drainage basin <br /> <br />is shown in Map 3. Gore Creek has a drainage area of 102 square miles at <br /> <br />its confluence with the Eagle River, Elevations in the watershed range <br /> <br />from 7700 to 13100 feet. The town of Vail (population 2261) is locatQd <br /> <br />in the Gore Creek Basin, The Eagle River upstream of Gore Creek has a <br /> <br />drainage basin area of 260 square miles, The total drainage arQa <br /> <br />downstream of Gore Creek is 362 square miles, Elevations in the Eagle <br /> <br />River basin range from 7700 feet to 13657 feet at Mt, Jackson, The towns <br /> <br />of Minturn (population 1060) and Redcliff (population 409) are located in <br /> <br />the Eagle River Basin above Dowds Junction. The communities of Avon <br /> <br />(population 640). Eagle (population 801) and Gypsum (population 743) are <br /> <br />located in Eagle County downstream of Dowds Junction, <br /> <br />/". <br />!. <br /> <br />A review of the historical records for the Gore Creek and Eagle River <br /> <br />basins involves analysis of stream gaging records. past flood history and <br /> <br />volumes. and volumes of water that pass thro~gh Dowds Junction during the <br /> <br /> <br />spring. <br /> <br />'.... <br /> <br />There have been at least ten stream gaging stations operating in the <br /> <br />Gore Creek basin from time to time since 1944, Seven stations are in <br /> <br />operation at the present. A gaging station located on Gore Creek near <br /> <br />its mouth was operational from 1944 to 1956. Two stations with fairly <br /> <br />good records and a combined drainage area of 26.1 square miles are <br /> <br />located in the headwaters ("Gore Creek at Upper Station near Minturn" and <br /> <br />"Black Gore Creek near Minturn"). Seven stream gaging stations are known <br /> <br />to have been operational in the Eagle River basin above Dowds Junction, <br /> <br />A gage on the Eagle River at Redcliff. drainage area of 70.0 square <br /> <br />miles. has been operational from 1911 to 1925 and from 1945 to the <br /> <br /> <br />present. <br />
