Recommended guidelines for salinity

in irrigation water are given as 500 to 1,000 mg/l for sensitive crops.

Some crops grown in southern Arizona and California are considered sensi-

tive crops. The three numeric criteria established by the Colorado

River basin states, which range from 723 to 879 mg/l, are within the

recommended guidelines for sensitive crops and safely protect that use.

Municipal damages of concern are primarily the possible corrosion of

pipes; the levels established also adequately protect that use.

The points chosen as appropriate for establishing numeric criteria

are three key locations in the lower main stem. Exhibit A affords a

,
clear explanation for the choice of the three locations at pages 55 and

56:

In order to provide for sound water quality objectives, numeric
criteria are to be established at three key stations (i.e. below
Hoover, below Parker, and at Imperial Dams). 'rhe state of Nevada
diverts Colorado River main stem water from Lake Mead for use in
the Las Vegas area, and the returns enter the lake just upstream
from Hoover Dam. The gaging s~ation.below Parker Dam is imme-
diately downstream of the major Lake Ilavasu diversion for the
Hetropolitan Water District of Southern California. Also, the
Central Arizona Project now under construction will divert from
Lake Havasu.

The large agricultural areas in the Imperial and Coachella
Valleys in California and Yuma area in Arizona and California
are served by diversions at Irnpe~ial Dam.

As explained on pages 25 through 27 of Exhibit B, the salinity control

program includes a water quality monitoring and analysis program that will

provide information on a basinwide basis for plan evaluation, The monitor-

ing points are not locations at which numeric criteria are now set or

contemplated, except for those located below Hoover and Parker Dams and

at Imperial Dam. The information will be used for analysis of system

changes that may occur upstream of the monitoring site.

1398

""""''''''--'~=....".,.,".,
