.

Delta County Independent. Wednesday, May 20, 1992 3

Chute

Continued from Page 1
provide the necessary 43 cubic
feet per second flow for the ditch
company during low water, "with-
outlhe undertow."
"It's an engineering problem,"
observed John WelfeU, who repre-
sented lhe Friends of the Gunni-
son. He noted the non-profit orga-
nization stood rcady to serve as
recipient and channel for grant
funding on the projcct.
Afler looking over drawings
from the Ml. Shavano Fish Hatch-
ery fish ladder and boat chute,
Black said he fell such a chute
could be built around the Hartland
Dam. "It wouldn't cost millions."
The chule would allow two-
and lhree-day rafl and boat tours
down the Gunnison River to
Dominguez Canyon, Jagodinski
said. He noted a new take-out
point, called Indian Point, is being
established in the canyon.
He said his business is already
receiving many reservations daily
and he has long dreamed of being

able to provide a two- or three-
day float trip for families.
He suggested float trips could
start above the Gunnison Gorge,
stay overnight at the eonlluenee
with the North Fork, then travel
down the river to Delta's Conflu-
ence Park for the second night,
where they would use local
motels and be able to attend the
"Thunder Mountain Lives
Tonight" production and visit Fort
Uncompahgre.
Attending the meeting were
Jagodinski, Black; Rich Sales,
city engineer; Shutt; Alan Maze,
Soil Conservation Service; Steve
McCall, Bureau of Reclamation;
Dave Langlois, state division of
wildlife; Rich Englehart, city
parks and recreation director;
Welfe!t; Pam Schilling, Delta
County intern, Allen and Miller.
They agreed to gi ve the idea
further study, including contacting
the engineers for the Ml. Shavano
project and Gary Lacey, a Boulder
expert on boat chute construction, ,

001'/45
