<br />the first ditch started nor completed In tne Grand Volley
<br />On MOlCh I, 1882, work started on the Pioneer or Mesa Co
<br />ditch (,1111 In use os port of the Grond Valley System) and
<br />water flam It was used April 20, 1882. The PaCifiC Slope
<br />drtch, 'ng since obondoned, started work on March 20,
<br />and ,we1t Into use July 1,1882. The Grand Valley Ditch
<br />Compacl ,lineal predecessor of The Grond Volley Irrlgollon
<br />Compooy,orQanlzed early the some summer, hod ItS ditch
<br />located and some work done hefore the end of the year.
<br />In January 1883, Matt Arch, who hod pioneered many
<br />ditches ,n Western COlorodo, and for whom 0 ditch he
<br />bUilt on Tomlchl Creek IS named and still In use, took
<br />charge of the reorganized Grand River Ditch company
<br />and on May 16 water from thiS conal was delivered for
<br />use. In i883 the Independent Ronchmen's ditch was
<br />slarted and some "oter supplied fhot fall. However the
<br />heodwOlks of thiS ditch were lost In the great flood of
<br />1884 and It thereafter to'lk water from the Grand Volley
<br />system In 1886, 011 the ditches In the volley that ore
<br />named above were consolidated With the Grond River conal,
<br />then'-'owned by the Travelers Insurance company, and
<br />_ . ~~~~~_loter the property was sold to Its woter users
<br />who e\ganlzed The Grand Volley Irrigation compan} to
<br />toke ,the property over While the Grand Valley canol
<br />decree IS doted August 22, 1882, It might rightfully have
<br />claimed 0 priority for 0 port of ItS water, on account 01

<br />In 1917 the wooden flume hod almost completely de-
<br />cayed, the pumping plant was In very poor repair and the
<br />DIStllCt proposed 0 rehabliltotlOn of ItS works by the
<br />Bureau of Reclamation The Bureau offered, at 0 cost
<br />of hoo ,000 to rebuild the works to supply 800
<br />second .feet from the project main canol , by means
<br />of a Siphon under Colorado river, from the upper end
<br />of tunnel No 3. DUring the Irrigation season tne Orchard
<br />Mesa Irngotlon District was to receive 400 second- feet
<br />of thiS water for pumping and Irngatlon and 400 second
<br />feet was to be used In the power plant of the Grand
<br />Volley Project, and the whole 800 second-feet was
