"

'000538

APPliCATIONS

Colorado Big Thompson Project

MODSIM has been successfully applied to the Colorado-Big
Thompson (C-BT) Project of Northern Colorado, an
important transbasin diversion and storage system which
brings water from the Upper Colorado River Basin on the
western slope of the Rocky Mountains to farms and cities
along the semi-arid eastern fromt range.

The system has capability of delivering up to 310,000 ac-ft of
water annually, although this amount has rarely been
delivered due to the supplemental nature of the project. The
addition of the Windy Gap pumping project on the western
slope has increased the likelihood that this amount could be
delivered if needed. .

under guidance by Colorado State University, extensive
simulation studies were conducted using MODS 1M for the
Northern Colorado Water Conservancy District (NCWCD)
concerning possible linkage between the C-BT and Poudre
River systems draining the eastern front range of the Rockies
(Hydro-Triad, 1987).

This extensive study required analysis of both western slope
and eastern slope water rights and included various
assumptions of future development in areas both impacting
and impacted by the C-BT system.

These studies resulted in firm yield estimates ranging from
32,000 to 46,000 ac-ft per year, depending on the assumptions
adopted. MODSIM was found to be a valuable tool in
modeling the complex water rights in the system. Extensive
calibration studies also confirmed the ability of MODSIM to
account for all important flows, yields and exchanges in the
system when compared with historical data.

7
