It
would round ~ a very popular wilderness which contains a variety
of terrain, including towering mountains, steep-sided canyons,
harsh granit~ock formations, and spruce-rimmed meadows.

Excellent re~ational and scenic qualities exist in the entire
addition, p~cularly in Rock Creek. This addition is a
continuationcf the topographic and geologic features found within
the Lost CraS Wilderness. The conservationists' proposal more
clearly delimates the topographic boundary than the does the
current wild~ss boundary.

Extensive am-alpine meadow and alpine wildlife habitat,
especially fa: large mammals, would be added to the limited
acreage cur rattly found in the wilderness area. The Lost Creek
addition wOUcldprotect all of the upper reaches of the botanically
varied Rock~k drainage. The Forest Service planning documents
also attest ,to the fact that a wilderness designation would be a
significant mnefit to the region's economy.21 Designation of the
addition wou~ complete the protection of the three mountain
ranges withimthe area: the Platte River, Kenosha, and Tarryalls.

During the ~ I process Lost Creek received more pro-wilderness
comments thanany other area in the state.

Resource Inf.-ation

Although some commercial forest lands do
are insignicmt when compared to the total
on the foresl:. The FPA' s greatest value

exist in the FPA, they
amount of timberlands
is not in profit for

21Piket~ Isabel National Forest Plan, October 1984.

18
