000500

acre-feet of dead storage. The water surface area will total 4,470 acres at
the top of the active capacity at an elevation of 6924.0 feet, The reservoir
will extend approximately 10 miles up the Dolores River, 4 miles up Beaver
Creek, I mile up Dry Creek, 2 miles up House Creek, and 2 miles up the Great
Cut saddle to the dike.

Accumulated sediments are expected to occupy a total volume of 11,000
acre-feet in 100 years, with about 2,800 acre-feet in the active pool,

DAWSON DRAW DAM AND RESERVOIR

Dawson Draw Dam, to be constructed on Dawson Draw about 9 miles north of
Cortez, will be an earth, sand, gravel, and rock structure with a volume of
106,000 cubic yards of material. At a crest elevation of 6556,0 feet, the
dam will be 56 feet high, 1,085 feet long, and 30 feet wide. Dawson Draw
Reservoir will provide habitat for fish, waterfowl, and other wildlife, and
will have a total capacity of 3,310 acre-feet, consisting of 3,210 acre-feet
of inactive capacity and 100 acre-feet of dead capacity, A surcharge
capacity of 2,360 acre-feet will be provided to store floodflows temporarily
until they can be discharged over the spillway, Sediments would occupy a
volume of 480 acre-feet after 100 years.

GREAT CUT PUMPING PLANT

Great Cut Pumping Plant at Great Cut Dike houses 14 vertical, mixed-flow
pumping units. Eight of the pumps are multistage and lift water from the
reservoir through a discharge line into the Dove Creek Canal. The 6
remaining pumps lift water through a discharge line into the "u" Lateral
when the reservoir water surface is too low for gravity releases. The annual
energy requirement for the Dove Creek Canal pumps is estimated to average
5,800,000 kilowatt-hours, with the "u" Lateral pumps averaging 99,000
kilowatt-hours per year.

PUMPING PL~~TS AND LATERALS

Five pumping plants, including three along the Dove Creek Canal and two along
the South Canal, will provide water to seven pipe lateral systems for
sprinkler irrigation, Approximatelv 82 miles of pressurized pipe laterals
will deliver nearly 48,000 acre-feet of water each year to farms in Montezuma
and Dolores counties, The average annual energy requirement for operating
the pumping plants is estimated to be approximately 10,890,000
kilowatt-hours,

DOVE CREEK CANAL

The Dove Creek Canal begins at the end of the pump discharge line at Great
Cut Pumping Plant and extends northwest 32.8 miles. It has an initial
capacity of 380 cubic feet per second and a terminal capacity of 46 cubic
feet per second. It includes turnouts to the South Canal and to three
pumping plants and four lateral systems,

2
