001282

RESBAL

RESQAL

RETURN

ROOT

ROUTE

RSALT

RULES

RULMEAD

Subroutine RESBAL operates reservoirs. This
involves storing inflows, computing releases,
bringing contents to target levels, meeting
maximum and minimum contents and release con-
straints, computing evaporation, bank storage,
water surface elevation, and surface area, and
checking the mass balance of a reservoir. This
subroutine may be called several times during any
given month.

Subroutine RESQAL computes the end-of-month con-
centrations of salt in reservoirs and releases.
The concentration in a reservoir is based on salt
inflow and salt in the reservoir at the beginning
of the month. The concentration of a release is
a weighting of the beginning and ending reservoir
concentrations.

Subroutine RETURN computes the quantity and qual-
ity of return flows and sends them to their des-
tinations. The subroutine also computes the per-
cent a demand was shorted during hydrologic
balancing (HYDRBAL) and writes shortage messages
to a temporary file if a shortage exists.

Function ROOT computes the real root of a polyno-
mial equation from the second to the ninth de-
gree. If no root is found after 20 iterations,
none is considered to exist and a value of zero
is returned.

Subroutine ROUTE routes water from a reservoir to
a downstream demand that is in short supply. The
subroutine routes water through any reservoirs
that are on the routing path.

Subroutine RSALT routes salt down through the
system, after the system has been balanced by
subroutine HYDRBAL.

Subroutine RULES sets the target contents rule
curves for the upper basin reservoirs, except
Lake powell, based on the elevation of Lake
Powell, power generation criteria, flood control
criteria, and the ratio of system contents to
system capacity. The subroutine also resets the
rule curve for Lake Mead.

Subroutine RULMEAD sets the target contents rule
curve for Lake Mead based on the creditable and
available space in the upper basin reservoirs and
required flood control space in Lake Mead. The
subroutine is called in months August through De-
cember. '

8
