<br />2869 <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />The Navajo Sandstone is the only formation of the <br />group exposed. TIle Kayenta Formation is present in the <br />subsurfLlce throughout at least the western part of the <br />reservation; it probably pinches out Ivithin the project <br />area. TIle Wingate Sandstone is present in the subsurface <br />throughout tI,e reservation. <br />Navajo Sandstone <br />Genera 1 c~laracter is tics . --The Navajo Sandstone, <br /> <br /> <br />the oldest formation exposed, crops out along the south <br /> <br /> <br />flank of McElmo dome in McElmo canyon, just above the <br /> <br /> <br />northern boundary, and in sec. 31, T. 36 N., R. 17 W., (fig. 8). <br /> <br />Figure 8 (caption on next page) belongs near here. <br /> <br /> <br />. The Navajo Sandstone was named by Gregory (1917, p. 57-59), <br />and the type locality is g~ven as the Navajo country in <br />general, where it is one of the most conspicuous formations. <br />It is recognized oVer a large part of the Colorado Plateaus <br />and is an important. aqulfer in many places. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />B~' <br />
