. (},ir~ 319
',::,. .,

.
!llMINATION OF' A POTEN'XIAL WILD AND SCENIC RIVER

.

,\

/

To '!he

l'EDERAL-STATE CC!l1l:aTIEE

1. .~:
REACH:

~~ite Riv~~, Colorado and Utah
(From - to, using 1angua~e which is as precise as possible and land-
mark descriptioroare preferred to legal descriptions)
The entire river

2. oUTSmroIll\; ATTRIBUTES What are the attributes or characterhtic8 that
", . . with their 1=ediate environments possess
outstending:y remarkable scenic, recreational,
geologic, :ieh and wildlife, historic, cultural, or
otber s~:ar values. , .," demoustrate why the
river should be studied under P.L. 90-542.
The Whi'te River from Meeker east including the south fork has outstanding scenic
qualities. Fisheries are considered excellent and deer and elk hunting are
considered very good. There is a proposal for the Flattops Wilderness Area, which
lies southerly from Trappers Lake.

Fro~ the town of Meeker and west to the confluence of the Green River, the
attributes are less outstanding considering the criteria used for evaluating a wild
river. The waters are turbid; large quantities of water are diverted for
irrigation; most of the lands adjacent to the river are used for agriculture and
grazing; fisheries consist primarily of suckers and other rough fish; and the water
quality is classified B1, which is. one step below drinking water. The water is
considered suitable for body contact. Float trips are not popular on the river.

,

3. PRIORITY O? STUDY List any characteristics or values that entitle this
river to sp~clnl consideratton (i.e., rare and endangered
.pecies, unique .ecosystems, 1mpend~ng develOpment, etc.)
Priority of study should be high because.there are 3 proposed alternate dam and
reservoir sites being considered.
1. Yellow Creek dam and reservoir
2. Ripple dam and reservoir
3. Paradise Park dam and reservoir
