This is especially true in areas where an adequate prey base is available
and natural nesting sites are scarce. The project area fits both of ,these criteria.
Raptor species that may be attracted to artificial nesting platforms in the
project area include the golden eagle, ferruginous hawk, red-tailed hawk,
swainson's hawk, common raven and the great horned owl. The kestrel readily
adapts to nest boxes placed on trees or wooden poles.

To improve nesting habitat for raptors in the project area, poles with an attached
nesting platform should be installed about one mile apart within the canal right-
of-way. The poles should vary from about 10 to 40 feet high. The poles and
materials for the platforms should be provided by the Bureau of Reclamation.
Labor for constructing the platforms and putting the poles up could be provided
by the Colorado Division of Wildlife and our Service.

31
