<br />(iQrge may be a wilderness, but its
<br />water level is controlled by man.
<br />That has caused some problems
<br />this year.
<br />Most of the rainbow trout
<br />hatched in the gorge this year were
<br />lost because of man-caused fluctua.
<br />lions In the river, a state fish

<br />That's a crucial loss, bet8ule no
<br />fish ate stocked In the Gold Medal
<br />trout walen of the gorge. Natural
<br />reproduction must do the Job
<br />alone.
<br />In addition, thhermen and
<br />rafters say they have been caught
<br />with too little water to float their
<br />rafts. only to have the water eome
<br />up dramatically later.
<br />. At least Some of the problems
<br />could be reduced if there were bet.
<br />ter communication among federal
<br />agencies and others who depend on
<br />the river, some people say.

<br />Federal officials say they are
<br />working harder to overcome the
<br />problems. A Sept. 30 meeting de.
<br />voted some time to the gorge and
<br />gave everyone a better understand-
<br />ing of the problems. said Steve
<br />McCall. an environmentalist with
<br />Ihe Bureau of Reclamation.

<br />controlled by three dams: Crystal.
<br />Morrow Point and Blue Mesa up.

<br />Black Canyon Of the Gunnison Na-

<br />The dams and their electric gen.
<br />erators are operated by the bureau
<br />In conjuncUon with the the Wesl-
<br />ern Area Power Administration of
<br />the Department of Energy,
<br />A private irrigaUon group, the
<br />Uncompahgre Valley Water Users
<br />Association, takes water out ot the
<br />river Just below the Cry, tal Dam.
<br />The gorge l13elf is managed by the
<br />Bureau of Land Managemen~ the
