0912

SUMMARY

In addition to developing Indian resources, the Animas-La Plata
Project will make water available to the non-Indian population for:
(1) substantial industrial development; (2) municipal and rural
domestic uses; (3) recreation and fish and wildlife enhancement;
(4) development of agricultural land and; (5) will provide flood
control benefits. Essentially all of the water for agriculture will
be for lands now partially irrigated or dry-farmed. In large segments
of the rural areas, the residents now haul their domestic water from
distant sources and store it at their homes in cisterns. The Animas-
La Plata Project would provide supplemental water for the previously dis-
cussed Fort Lewis Mesa.

The projects are encompassed within the boundaries of the Four Corners
Economic Development Region currently designated under the Public Works
and Economic Development Act of 1965 beyause of high unemployment and
depressed incomes. The economic benefits of the projects would cer-
tainly go a long way toward eliminating the depressed conditions of the
Four-Corners Region.

~
