001943

WILl.iLIFE E. VA LUA TICN

. Try to obtain as complete an inventory as possible of the wildlife
species present on your area (Notel this may be largely handled by
by a special group working with the Colorado Division of Wildlife,
you will be notified).

A. For major species (especially threatened or endangered and eco-
nomically lr.:'flortan1; ones), try to assess the affects of wilderness
designation on the species, following guidelines in "Field studies
Checklist" .

B. Possible sources of info:~ationl

a) The local Wildlife Conservation Officer (state Division of Wild-
life) may have the most direct knowledge of the wildlife in your
area _ a list shewing the names and phone numbers of the weo's
for each area will be mailed to you.

b) Each National Forest has a forest Wildlife Biologist who may have
knowledge of the wildlife in your area and of possible management
plans which could conflict with wilderness designation.

. Suggestions for Resource Conflict StUdy

A. Questions for Consideration
~) Is the ar~a subject ~o =ini~g acti;it~es which would destroy
wildlife habitat?
b) Is the area being considered for wildlife habitat management
of any kind, such as controlled burning, fertilization, herbi-
cidal treatment, brush Clearing, logging. dam construction,
stream improve~~nt6, anchor Chaining, etc.
c) Is the area currently being used or being considered tor use as
a wildlife research area? Some types of research might be affect
ed by wilderness desigrAtion.
d) Is any fish stOCking currently done or planned for in the streams
or lakes on the area? These plans may also be changed by wilder~
ness designatio~.
e) How would the banning of vehicle use affect hunter and fisherman
access to recrea.ion areas? would an adequate harvest of big
game species be possible without vehicle access? Could foot
access to the area be facilitated by development of parking areas
trailheads around the boundaries of the wilderness area?
f) Are there plans to transplant animals into the area which might
be affected by designation as a wilderness? Mountain goat trans~
plants would be a good example.
g) Are especially important wildlife areas such as big game winter
range, bird nesting areas, migration routes, etc. present on the
area wtich would be ?rotected by wilderness designation?
h) ~ill the level of liv~stock gra~ing (if any) be reduced by wilder
ness designation? Generally, less grazing is better for wildlife
i) Is the area suitable for lotging which might be detrimental to
some wildlife? Note, loggin~ can benefit wildlife in some cases
by creating diversity of vegetation, but can be detrimental if it
is done in large block~ (clearcutting) or leads to erosion and
siltation cf streams.
