002797

7.2 Bony tail Chub

The designated critical habitat for the bonytail chub includes portions of the Yampa, Green, and
Colorado Rivers and covers the same river reaches as the humpback chub. As shown in Table 1 in
Appendix C, the total required pond area varies from a low of 0.5 acres for an adult population
density of 10 fish per mile to 2.0 acres for a density of 40 fish per mile.

7.3 Humpback Chub

The designated critical habitat for the bonytail chub includes portions of the Yampa, Green, and
Colorado Rivers and covers the same river reaches as the bonytail chub. As shown in Table 2 in
Appendix C, the total required pond area varies from a low of 0.7 acres for an adult population
density of 10 fish per mile to 2.7 acres for a density of 40 fish per mile.

7.4 Razorback Sucker

The designated critical habitat for the razorback sucker includes portions of the Yampa, Green,
White, Duchesne, Gunnison and Colorado Rivers and covers the largest amount of river miles of all
the Upper Colorado River endangered fish species. As a result, the estimated pond space for rearing
of razorback sucker was much greater than the space estimated for the other species. As shown in
Table 3 in Appendix C, the total required pond area varies from a low of 3.7 acres for an adult
population density of 10 fish per mile to 14.9 acres for a density of40 fish per mile.

7.5 Summary and Discussion

The previous estimates indicate that large-scale, restoration stocking efforts will require between 6
and 22 acres of pond space over and above that needed for brood stock development. Table 7.5-1
summarizes the pond space estimates for the various adult fish densities.

Table 7.5-1 Summary of Pond Space Requirements for Varying Adult Fish Densities
(Acres)

Adult Fish per Colorado BonytaiJ Humphack Razorback
River Mile Squawfish Chub Chub Sucker TOTAL
10 0.6 0.5 0.7 3.7 5.5
20 1.4 1.0 L3 7.4 11,1
30 L7 I.5 2.0 IL2 16,4
40 2.2 2.0 2.7 14.9 22.0

37
