002793

As part of this stocking plan, detailed outlines were provided regarding the following activities:

. source of broodstock,
. number of fish to be released,
. size of fish to be released,
. condition of fish when released,
. time and location of release,
. monitoring of stocked fish.

Table 6.4-1, adapted from the Stocking Plan (Burdick et aI. 1995), provides a summary of the
razorback sucker stocking plan in the Upper Colorado and Gunnison River through FY 2000.

Table 6.4-1 Projected Stocking of Razorback Sucker

Mean Fish Number ofFish at
Stocking Locations Year Size (inches) each location'
Gunnison River near Delta, 4 10,000
FY 1996 8 2.500
Colorado 12 600
llilll 4 10,000
FY 1997 8 2.500
Colorado River near Rifle 12 600
4 20,000
FY 1998b 8 5,000
12 1,200
4 30,000
FY 1999 8 7.500
12 1,800
4 40.000
FY 2000 8 10,000
12 2,400

~: Priority will be given to stocking the Gunnison River if sufficient numbers offish are not available
to stock both rivers.
a. Number of fish may have to be adjusted depending upon the number of fish produced from paired
matings. survival to stocking, and available rearing space.
b. Additional propagation facilities will be available by FY 1998 for increased production of captive-
reared razorback suckers.

Due to the limited amount of propagation facilities, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Biologists stocked only
282, II to 16-inch razorback suckers into the Gunnison River at Delta, Colorado on October 4, 1996.
None were stocked in the Colorado River in 1996. Future stocking of different sizes of juvenile and
sub-adult razorback sucker during FY 1997-2000 will determine the relationship between the size
stocked and their subsequent survival in the wild (Burdick 1996).

33
