The original mission of the hatchery was to rear sport and forage fishes for the sport
fishery in Lake Powell. However, with the implementation of the Recovery Program, a single OA-
acre pond was designated for use as a grow-out facility for Colorado River endangered fishes.

Although Wahweap was considered a temporary or interim propagation facility, this site had the
potential to be expanded to meet long-term propagation needs. In 1994, the Utah Division of
Wildlife Resources began a feasibility and design study for additional endangered fish propagation
facilities at the Wahweap site (U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service 1995a).

The construction of additional propagation facilities for endangered fish at the Wahweap site began
in 1995. A large pond at this site was divided into five 0.35 acre ponds. An additional six OA-acre
ponds were constructed in 1996 to serve as grow-out/production facilities and as a backup refuge for
Upper Colorado River razorback sucker (Wydoski 1996b). Funds provided during FY 1997 are to
be used to construct and equip a 30 foot by 50 foot wet lab and storage building, and to install
electrical, water supply, and drain lines (U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service 1996a).

The propagation facilities developed at Wahweap through the end ofFY 1997 are illustrated in Table
5.3-3.

Table 5.3-3 Summary of Propagation Facilities Development at Wahweap State Fish
Hatchery

Ponds: Total
Year # Size Acres Other Facilities
1994 Completed feasibility and design study for additional
propagation facilities by Utah Division of Wildlife
Resources
1995 5 0.35 175
1996 6 0.4 2.4
1997 Install a 30' by 50' wet-lab and storage building including
electrical. water supply. and drain lines
TOTALS 11 4.15

The expenditures by the Recovery Program for construction and research facilities at Wahweap SFH
through FY 1997 total approximately $850,000.

5.3.4 City of Craig, Colorado Municipal Facility

In an effort to provide additional backup refugia facilities, primarily for the razorback sucker, the
Recovery Program began a feasibility and design study to make use of two abandoned sewage

28
