002757

14. Between 1988 and 1990, approximately 86,000 squawfish ranging between 1.5 inches and 7
inches were stocked in Kenney Reservoir. In 1992, no squawfish were captured in Kenney
Reservoir.

IS. The Recovery Program has no plans at this time for additional stocking of Colorado squawfish.

16. Approximately 2,000 bonytail chub were stocked in the lower Colorado River in October, 1996
as part of an experimental stocking program. Planned stocking locations are outside designated
critical habitat areas. There are no plans being developed for restoration! recovery stocking of
bonytail chub at this time. Experimental stocking will continue through FY 98.

17. All stocking of humpback chub occurred prior to initiation of the Recovery Program. A total
of7,400 humpback chub were tagged and stocked in the Cataract Canyon area of the Colorado
River. No additional stocking has occurred since. The Recovery Program has no plan for
stocking humpback chub.

18. A stocking plan for razorback sucker for the Gunnison River and Colorado River called for
stocking of 13,100 razorback suckers in FY 96. Due to limited propagation and production
facilities, only 282 razorback suckers were available for stocking into the Gunnison River.
None were stocked into the Colorado River.

19. The Recovery Program has set a goal of increasing the number of adult razorback suckers in
the middle Green River from an aging and declining population of 500 to a population of 1,000
fish by the year 2000. Given the existing facilities' limitations, the goal of 1,000 adult razorback
suckers in the middle Green River by the year 2000 will not likely be met.

20. Only 15 adult humpback chub from Black Rocks area of the Colorado River are being
maintained in refuge at Horsethief State Wildlife Area. There is no backup refuge for this
population. No refugia are being maintained for the Yampa, Desolation-Gray Canyon,
Westwater Canyon, or Cataract Canyon presumptive stocks. No brood stock have been
developed for humpback chub.

21. The Recovery Program has no plans to stock humpback chub, no brood stock, and no facilities
which would make this possible.

22. There is a significant but unquantified deficit in Recovery Program facilities needed for primary
backup refugia and development of brood stocks for all presumptive genetic stocks of all four
endangered species.

23. The facilities needs for large scale restoration stocking of hatchery reared endangered fish to
augment wild stocks and achieve recovery have not been defined. The estimates provided in
this report indicate that something on the order of six to 22 acres of pond space will be required
to achieve recovery/restoration stocking over and above that needed for brood stock and
refugia.

Xlll
