<br />001091 <br /> <br />January L, 1979 <br /> <br />SU~iMARY <br /> <br />Status of the Wild and Scenic Rivers Program <br /> <br />With the enactment of the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act on October 2, 1968, <br />P.L. 90-542, 8 rivers or river segments were included in the National Wild <br />and Scenic Rivers System. (See Item A, Section A, attached.) <br /> <br />The 1968 Act also designated 27 rivers for study (See Item A, Section C.I., <br />attached) Section 4(a) of P.L. 90-542, required that the studies for the 27 <br />designated rivers be completed and submitted to Congress no later than <br />Octobe 2, 1978. <br /> <br />Since October 19~~: <br /> <br />a. Twenty-five studies have been completed and reports submitted to the <br />President and the Congress: <br /> <br />b. Four study reports (Obed River and Buffalo River, Tennessee; <br />Youghiogheny,,Pennsylvania and Maryland; and Pine Creek, Pennsylvania) <br />are at the Office of Management and Budget for review. On the Obed <br />River, only a 45 mile segment of the 100 mile segment studied has <br />been added to the National System. <br /> <br />c. Fourteen rivers or river segments have been added to the National <br />System under Federal administration. (See table "River Mileage <br />Classi.fication...", attached.) <br /> <br />d. Five rivers or river segments have been added to the National System <br />under State administration. (See Section B) . <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />e. One river has been added to the National System under Federal/State <br />administration. (See table, as above.) <br /> <br />f. Three rivers have been found not to qualify: Allegheny, Pa.; <br />Clarion, Pa.; and Maumee, Ind. and Ohio. <br /> <br />g,. Forty-eight additional rivers or river segments have been designated <br />for study, for a total of 75 study rivers. (See Item A, Section B. II, III, <br />IV, and V, attached.) 29 rivers were added by P.L. 93-621, January 3, <br />1975; and one each by P.L. 94-199, December 31, 1975; and P.L. 94-486, <br />October 12, 1976. The National Parks and Recreation Act of 1978, <br />P.L. 95-625, November lO;197B,ildded 17 rivers for study. <br /> <br />Studied on 48 of the 75 study rivers remain tO,be completed <br /> <br />The 28 rivers or river segments in the National System total 2,317 <br />miles; 2,072 miles Federal, 245 mi],es State. (See table "River <br />Mil.cage Classifi.cation...11, attached.) <br />
