0,,< 9~-
1.1 L 'J

SEGMENT C

SegmentC is that portion of the Green River in Dinossur National Monument
from the Gates of Lodore downstream to the southern boundary of Dinosaur
National Monument. This segment contains Canyon of Lodore, Whirlpool
Canyon, Island Park, Rainbow Park and Split Mountain Canyon. This segment
is 44 miles long.

Comments

The study team has determined that Segment C qualifies for inclusion in
the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System. The basis for this determina-
tion is the outstandingly remarkable scenic, recreational, geologic, fish
and wildlife valuea found in and along the segment. The segment was found
to meet the criteria for wild classification.

The major concerns relevant to designating this segment of the Green
River are:
a) Why add a river segment to the National Wild and Scenic River
System when the segment already receives some protection from
the National Park Service?
b) What effects will designation of this segment have on current
Park Service management?
c) What effects will designation of this segment have on future
water resouFce development projects on the Yampa, River?

~

Inclusion in the National System would offer river Segment C greater
protection than exists currently. Also, designation of Segment C
would constitute a unique and valuable addition to the National Wll.d
and Scenic River System. Management as a wild river would complement
current management plans for this segment. Future water resource
development projects'on the Yampa River would continue to be evaluated
on a project-by-project basis.

Your views on the concerns,..for,rthis segment are welcome.

~

Alternatives

For that portion of the Green River from the Gates of Lodore to the southern
boundary of Dinosaur National Monument, two alternative plans are suggested.

Alternative C-l

Take ~ action., No additional protection offered the outstandingly
remarkable values found along this segment. The National Wild and Scenic
Rivers System will not be expanded to include this segment of the Green River.

Alternative C-2

Desi~ate this segment as a wild river area in the National Wild and Scenic
Rivers System. The outstandingly remarkable scenic, recreational, geologic,
fish and wildlife' valueacof this segment will receive full protection under

"

:,,(,:..
