'tr~'~'3l

.

BLM Accomplishments

New Mexico

BLM is continuing to work with the State of New Mexico to acquire funding for the plugging
of orphaned wells, A contract for plugging the Holloway Well in Jones Canyon should be
awarded by the end of the fiscal year. The Farmington District has initiated a quarterly water
quality monitoring program in the San Juan Basin,

Approximately 40 unlined pits associated with oil and gas development have been approved for
closure and an additional 210 are being reviewed for closure, While the pit closure program is
mainly aimed at protecting water resources from hydrocarbon pollutants, many pits also
contain saline produced water. The interagency investigation of the hydrology and salinity of
the Aneth project area continued for a fourth year.

This fiscal year, riparian and wetland inventories are being completed for Colorado River
tributaries, in order to determine the functioning condition of riparian areas, Watershed
improvements fontinue at the Pump Canyon demonstration project, where best management
practices (ripafian, grazing, oil, and gas rehabilitation) will be demonstrated and monitored,
New watershed projects were started along Palluche Wash to establish riparian vegetation, and
improve functioning condition,

Total Salinity Dollars Spent: $72,000

.

Nevada

A study by Water Resources Division, USGS has been completed for BLM on the Las Vegas,
Meadow Valley and Pahranagat Washes and Muddy River. The BLM expects to receive a
report describing salinity source concentration and flows by the end of the fiscal year, In the
Meadow Valley Wash area, where high salt concentrations are expected, an improvement of an
old soil survey has been initiated,

Total Salinity Dollars Spent = $ 30,000

Utah

The Vernal District implemented salinity controls by construction of six reservoirs,
rehabilitating 200 acres of Greenwood sales areas, and by plowing and seeding of 200 acres in
Big Wash,

The Richfield District reconstructed an earthen dike in Meadow Gulch, and the earthen dam at
Meadow Gulch Reservoir. Two silt-free reservoirs were also reconstructed in the headwaters
of Meadow Gulch, This maintenance requirement was created by high intensity rainfall, and
associated flooding. Also in Richfield, an initial salt and sediment yield map (in the form of a
geographic information system product) of the Birch Creek watershed, was prepared for

.

21
