l}n~'25

... .' 4

.

USGS Accomplishments

cores and a few soil samples. The data report was published in 1994, An interpretative report
describing results of the study is currently in review and is scheduled for publication in 1995.

Based on preliminary data and results of the detailed study, the National Irrigation Water
Quality Program has decided that the Lower Gunnison Basin and Grand Valley will go into the
next study phase of the program, which is planning for mitigation. the east side of the
Uncompahgre Project and the lower Grand Valley will probably be the focus of the planning
effort,

Grand Valley Unit Monitoring

In a report released in 1993, the Inspector General (IG) of the Department of the Interior
stated that the Bureau of Reclamation has not adequately determined if the salinity control
projects have had an effect on salt concentrations and loads in the Colorado River. In 1994 an
investigation was initiated to determine the effects to salinity by salinity control projects in the
Grand Valley.'The objectives of the investigation are'to estimate salt loads and salt
concentrations for inflow and outflow stations for the Grand Valley Unit and to determine if
there are trends in salt concentrations and loads related to the Grand Valley Unit. Preliminary
evaluation of trends was completed in FY 1994, The analysis will be refined and a report
prepared in FY 1995,

.

Nevada

Salt Load Estimates from Public Lands

The project, conducted with Bureau of Land Management support, was described in detail in
the FY 1989 report to the Advisory Council, The primary objective of the project is to collect
hydrologic and water-quality information that will help identify source areas for saline
discharge and result in improved estimates of salt loading from public lands, Data are
published annually in the USGS Water Data Report for Nevada,

A report describing estimated water and salt budgets for the basins is in preparation, Data
from the stations mentioned previously and reconnaissance samples from ephemeral streams,
springs, 1l!id wells in the basins will be used in the report,

New Mexico

In addition to the activities related to the hydrologic data program (attachment 1), the New
Mexico District was involved with one interpretative study during fiscal year 1994:

.

IS
