R- <br />Colo.. took credit for language in <br />the Arizona Desert Wilderness <br />Act passed by the Senate yester- <br />day that denies a federal water <br />right for the new wilderness areas. <br />"This bill sets a very important <br />precedent for Colorado's own wil- <br />derness debate, which ha! been <br />hung up over the water issue for <br />years," the Republican lawmaker <br />said in a news release. <br />"This Arizona bill is the frrst <br /> <br />ume we expressly denied a federal <br />wilderness water right," he said. <br />The act designates ~'O sections <br />of desert lands along the Colorado <br />River in Arizona. <br />"If these proposed wilderness <br />areas in Arizona had a federal wa- <br />ter right. almost all development <br />on the Colorado River and its trib- <br />utaries, in the Upper Basin would <br />lhe at the mercy of federal bureau- <br />-'Crades," he said. <br />Colorado has not fully used its <br /> <br />allocation of Colorado Kiver water : <br />under interstate agreements.
