<br />TEI'lNES SEE <br /> <br />Tennessee passed legislation in 1968 net provided guidelines and the means <br />for protecting outstanding scenic strearus. As adopted, the Scenic Rivers Act <br />designat~d ten streams in the system. Subsequent legislation in 1969 amended <br />the act to include one wore river. Legislative action then also removed <br />substantial portions of ttiQ rivers due to local concern about controls on land. <br />use. The eleven rivers in the system total approximately 360 miles. Streams are <br />designated in three classes: Natural, fastoral, or Partially Developed. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />The Scenic Rivers System is administered by the Department of Conservation <br />and the Commissioner of that agency is authorized to make and enforce such <br />regulations as are necessary to carry out the provisions of the act, The <br />Commissioner cas the power of eminent domain and he may acquire, on behalf of <br />the state, lands in fee title or an interest in land in the form of scenic or <br />public use easements. <br /> <br />The act prohibits commercial timber harvesting in designated areas and no <br />new roads can be built parallel to the river within the corridor. Dredging and <br />other shoreline alternations are generally not permissable on Scenic Rivers. <br /> <br />NATIONAL RI'lERS <br /> <br />Several of Tennessee's rivers were studied for possible inclusion in the <br />Na tional \-lild and Scenic Rivers Sys tern. 45 miles of the Obed were added to the <br />System in 1976, but a r.ineral activity evaluation is currently underway for the <br />area, so final adjustments of the study are not yet completed, The Buffalo was <br />studied, and State preservation was recommended.
