00ll~9

~
.

user interface

~ ~

I data files 11i!l ll> 124 month study I

Figure I. Relationship of user to data files and model

Thus, the user of the interface interacts directly with the 24MSI, while the interface takes
care of executing the 24MSM, the 4MSM file inputs/outputs, and transferring and moving
24MSM datafiles.

5.0 Description - User Level

5.1 Design principles

A focused and well-defined project at the initial stages allowed for a rapid and thorough
design of the interface. The design was guided by some basic tenants or ideas of the inter-
face design that emerged during the course of the preliminary design dialogues. The first
was that the most important aspect of the interface was the need to fully support "what
if...?" scenario generations. This, in a sense, is the main goal of the interface. Secondly,
instead of the fairly cornmon approach of providing separate pre- and post-processing
modules, there appeared to be a strong need to break that distinction, thus simultaneously
displaying input and output on the screen. Thirdly, a strong emphasis was placed on the
readability of the interface. Especially important was using a readable font, careful combi-
nation of colors in the menus and dialogue boxes, and clear graphical displays. In further
support of this idea, the user can customize the interface in terms of the colors for the
tables, dialogue boxes, graph lines, etc. by specifying them in a user set-up file. Fourthly,
because the Colorado River Basin is operated by two coordinated but distinct regional
. offices, it was felt that this distinction should be continued in the interface, resulting in the
separation between Upper and Lower Colorado reservoirs at a fairly high level in the paths
of the interface menus.

24 Month Study Project Documenta1.ion Volume I

618191

6
