0011{S

1.0 Introduction

The 24 Month Study Interface (24MSI) is a graphical user interface built on top of the 24
Month Study Model (24MSM). The interface provides functionality to interactively
display, edit, visualize, and run the 24MSM. It fundamentally supports "what ifl..."
scenario generation by allowing the user: to display a screen consisting of graphed input
and output data, to graphically edit the input parameters, to run the 24MSM, and to
examine the changes and impacts that the recent editing of the input data had on the output
data. All of this can be done from the same screen.

The 24MSI was developed at the University of Colorado's Center for Advanced Decision
Support for Water and Environmental Systems (CADSWES) through a cooperatvie agree-
ment with the Bureau of Reclamation's Lower Colorado Region.

There are two volumes of documentation. Volume I is addressed at the user level, where
the 24MSM, project history, the interface itself, and suggested future enhancements are
described. Volume II is written in a more technical fashion, addressed at the programmer
level. As such, it includes a description of the internal mechanics of the interface, flow
charts of the directory structures and routine calling, and source file documentation.
Included in the source file documentation are descriptions as to the purpose of a given
routine, authors, editors, variable descriptions,an other progranlming information.

This document is addressed to the users of the 24MSI. It begins with this introduction,
describing the functionality and capabilities that it provides. Next, an overview of the
24MSM itself is given, detailing which other models it is used in conjunction with and
what the 24MSM's main functions are in the operation and management of the Colorado
River Basin. Also, since the model is a derivative model, the lineage of the model and its
relationship with its progenitors, CRSM and CRSS are given, with a description of the
data files which are used by the model.

Following this is a description of the project history. This details project personnel and
major milestones of the project. Next is a brief description of how the 24MSI is actually
implemented, noting the software and hardware it runs on.

The bulk of this document begins with the section "User Level Description". This section
describes the considerations and principles that were followed in designing the interface.
From these principles came a major division of the interface into four modules: FILE,
TEXT, GRAPH, and IMAGE. The functionality of each of these modules is described
fully. Next is a description of the main screen, consisting of the boxes, tables, and buttons,
which are present always on the screen and are the primary means of interaction between
the user and the 24MSI. This section also describes how the user navigates through the
interface, or how the "control" of the interface is set up.

. Finally, a short section relates ideas of future enhancements to the 24MSI.

24 Month Study Project Documentation Volume I

618191

3
