Also, the user
will be prompted to input a name for the Postscript file, with the suffix BPS automatically
appended to the filename. It makes use of the routines rasttoppm, ppmtopgm, and pgm-
toeps. Finally, the user can send a portion of the screen directly to the printer by using the
right mouse button. This uses the script files printerstuff/PSPRT or printerstuff/
PSPRTSCALE, again ifre-scaling is necessary. It makes use of the routines rasttoppm,
ppmtopgm, and pgmtops. All of these files must reflect the local computer/printer configu-
ration. These files need to be consistent with the computer/printer configuration that the
24MSI is running on. Specifically, at the end of each script is the command to pipe the
output to the line printer (j lpr -Pps). The flag on the lpr command, .pps, must be updated
to be the name of the desired printer.

1.11 Source Code Documentation

Descriptions of the source code routines can be retreived online. This is acheived by typ-
ing "man <routine name>" (e.g. man blegend), which emulates the UNIX online ability to
access a description of a command. The description consists of the subroutine/function
name, its parameters, the authors and editors, the variable names and descriptions, com-
mon blocks, and external function declarations.

The online documentation of the routines described above contains the items in the head-
er of the actual source code for the 24MSI routines. This information is gotten by strip-
ping the header information directly from the source code. To do this, a program was
written to check each line to see whether or not that information should be included in the
header/man page. This program, reference, is located in the directory headers. If the
source file of a routine is changed at any time, this program must be run on the source file
to create an up-to-date version of the *.p file (simply the stripped header of the source
code). This is done by the command "headersfreference <filename>! headersfpdirecto-
ry". Then the resultant file, that is the <filename>.p file in the pdirectory must be moved to
the directory where all of the stripped header files are located. These header files need to
be located in the fusrfmanfmanp directory.

24 Month Sludv Proiect :Doa.lmenlalion Volume n

618/91

10
