These correspond to the valid combinations,
while an "X" in a cell refers to an invalid combination.

5.5 IMAGE module

The IMAGE module provides a spatial context to the 24MSM, by providing a schematic
of the Colorado River Basin. This can be used to orient a user who is unfamiliar with the
river basin. It also provides access to a listing of physical characteristics of the individual
reservoirs. These listings are controlled by editing user-customized files.

5.6 Main Screen

A main core of functionality to which a user needs to have access was identified. These
capabilities were translated into user interface components such as dialogue boxes,
buttons, and menus to provide a consistent interface display and to provide control mecha-
nisms for interaction with the interface. As a result, a "main screen" that is displayed
during the entire course of using the 24MSI was designed. At the top of the "main screen"
is a "Control Bar", segmented into 4 sections: FILE, TEXT, GRAPH, and IMAGE. Notice
that these roughly correspond to the modules identified in the prelinlinary design and
elucidated above. Each of the four cells in the top row highlight when the mouse is passed
over them, meaning that they are selectable. Since these cells are on the screen for the
duration of a session, these are available to the user at any time. Clicking on a cell puts the
user back up to the top level in the decision tree or root menu, at that respective module.

This contrasts with the ESCAPE button, located near the bottom right corner of the screen.
This button allows the user to jump back one step in the decision tree. Thus, navigating
through the menus is achieved by selecting initially from the "Control Bar", then
following a path in the subsequent menus until the desired task is completed. The
ESCAPE button again allows the user to go back one step, to either recover from an errant
mouse click or as part of a directed navigation.

The second row of the "Control Bar" contains more specific information about each
module. Beneath the FILE cell, for instance, the file currently in use will be displayed.
Beneath the TEXT cell, a parameter, changing as the user travels through the decision-
menu path, provides context to the current screen. Beneath the GRAPH cell is the location
to place the "script" filename. At the bottom center-left of the screen is the message box.
This is the location where messages that may give brief instructions to the user or, espe-
cially after running the 24MSM, provide a means to relate an error in operation.

The four buttons near the bottom right-center corner provide a means of controlling
processes. The QUIT button quits the entire 24MSI, first checking to see if any changes to
. the input file have been made, and seeing if the user wishes to save these changes. The
ESCAPE button, as mentioned previously, allows the user to jump back one step when
traveling through the menu structure. The RUN button calls and executes the actual
24MSM. The PRINT button provides hard copy output -- the type of output being context
dependent For instance, if the button is selected while in the TEXT module, then line

24 Month Study Project Documentation Vo1wne I

618/91

9
