00l1~G

24 Month Study Project Documentation

David M. Theobald
University of Colorado, CADSWES
and
Terrance J. Fulp
US Bureau of Reclamation, Lower Colorado Region

Management Summary

The 24 Month Study Interface (24MSI) is a graphical user interface (GUI) for the 24
Month Study Model (24MSM). The 24MSI fundamentally supports "what if?.." scenario
generation and analysis by allowing the user to:

. display graphically the input and output data,

. edit (either graphically or texturally) the input paranleters,

. run the 24MSM, and

. examine the changes and impacts that the recent editing of the input data had on the
output data.

All of this can be accomplished from the same screen.

The 24MSI was developed at the University of Colorado's Center for Advanced Decision
Support for Water and Environmental Systems (CADSWES) through a cooperative agree-
ment with the Bureau of Reclamation's Lower Colorado Region. The project was driven
by the basic premise that the GUI should enhance the use of the existing model while
maintaining the integrity of that model. Both University and Reclamation personnel were
involved in the initial conception of the project, as well as throughout the design, imple-
mentation, debugging, and final delivery of the software. This cooperation was crucial to
the success of the project. Some 14 person-months of time was spent by CADSWES
personnel on the project. It was estimated that 5 person-months were spent by Reclama-
tion personneL

The 24MSI runs on a SUN MicroSystems workstation using the UNIX operating system..
It is written in Fortran and uses a graphics library developed by CADWES, implemented

61&/91
