The project proposes to phase out the spring collection and

transmission system, since the amount of water produced by the

springs mainly depends on the amount of irrigation water applied

to the mesa above the springs. A diversion structure on the colo-

rado River is proposed instead, with a treatment plant of adequate

capacity to provide additional water to meet summertime demands.

When the wintertime demands exceed the spring's capacity, then the

plant will start operating full time.

The project also proposes a new transmission line from the

plant to the storage tanks, additional storage capacity, and improve-

ment and upgrading of the distribution system. The consultants also

propose use of universal meters for all the existing taps in town. I

The total cost of the project is estimated to be $500,000.

RECOMMENDATION AND PRIORITY

The town of Grand Valley has an immediate need to reconstruct

and improve its water system in order to cope with the present and

future needs for water. The town has already contacted various

federal agencies to see what amount of money is available to help

towards the water project. It appears that grants up to 50 percent

of the project cost can be secured. A construction budget is there-

fore proposed as follows:

Federal Grants
state Funds (to be repaid
by water use charges)

$250,000
250,000

Total

$500,000

-3-

2414

l
