Box 113 50
Salt Lake City, UT 84147-0350

Fil.'-: 300-11

In answer to a request received from Ernest M. Weber, Chairman of the
Colorado River Basin Salinity Control Work Group, I submit the following
information regarding the expansion of the Uintah Basin Salinity Control
Unit.

Recently, we received a contact from Representative Howard Nielson's
office requesting information on the proposed annexation. Representative
Beverly Evans has also been in to see me. She indicated that she plans
to meet with Howard Nielson to develop a strategy for area annexation.

Since there has been considerable pressure to annex the area (Duchesne
and Uintah Counties), I thought it best to include all of the areas that
are now being farmed that are not included in the Salinity Project.

Only a small portion (eight percent) of irrigated lands in the Uinta
Basin lie outside of the approve~ Colorado River Salinity Control Project.
These lands are found in four general locations. The Tabiona/Hanna,
Fruitland (including Red Creek and Currant Creek), and Strawberry River
areas are found in western Duchesne County, approximately 20 miles west
and northwest of the community of.Duchesne. The fourth area is found
in eastern and southern Uintah County along the Green River.

DESCRIPTION OF AREAS --

Green River -- Uintah County:

Approximately 19 individuals irrigate an estimated 5,766 acres along
the Green River from Dinosaur National Monument south to the White River
just below Ouray. Crops grown along the Green River include alfalfa,
corn, small grains, and pasture. An estimated 1,914 acres of the total
5,766 acres have already been treated with pivot and wheeline sprinklers.
The remaining 3.,852 acres need i~proved irrigation systems applied to
the land. Estimated salt load reduction from tre~tment of the 3,852
acres is 3,577 tons annually. .'

\~J

(j The Soil eonse'v,~:on Sllf"lce
il .n 'i.ncy 0111\.
~ Unll~11 St.let D..'!p..rtm,nt 01 Aorlcullur.
