<br />Bureau of ReClamatio. <br /> <br />i~l~~ IJ\ <br />1 SC ~i" <br /> <br />J <br /> <br />" <br /> <br />-j <br />I <br /> <br />News Release <br /> <br />JAN 2 199Z <br /> <br /> <br />Upper Colorado Region <br /> <br />Dee Kuhn (202) 208-4662 <br />Ronald Johnston (303) 248-06l8 <br />For Release December l8, 1991 <br /> <br />INTERIOR DEPARTMENT AGENCIES TO NEGOTIATE <br />CONTRACT FOR LONG-TERM PROTECTION OF GUNNISON RIVER FLOYS <br />- <br /> <br />The Department of the Interior's Commissioner of Reclamation Dennis B. <br /> <br />Underwood today announced that the Bureau of Reclamation, the National Park <br /> <br />Service, and the Bureau of Land Management are entering into formal <br /> <br />negotiations on a water delivery contract to provide long-term protection of <br /> <br />stream flows in western Colorado's Gunnison River. <br /> <br />The Colorado Yater Conservation Board and other organizations also are <br /> <br />participating in the negotiations. <br /> <br />The contract would provide specific river flow patterns in the Gunnison <br /> <br />River through the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Monument and the <br /> <br />Gunnison Gorge in western Colorado to protect fish, wildlife and other <br /> <br />resources in these areas. <br /> <br />"This partnership effort will result in a balanced resources management <br /> <br />plan that will enhance and protect the environmental values of the Monument <br /> <br />while maintaining the water storage and delivery purposes for which the <br /> <br />upstream reservoirs were originally constructed," Underwood said. "It will <br /> <br />also allow us to maintain current levels of power generation." <br /> <br />The upstream facilities include Blue Mesa, Morrow Point, and Crystal <br />Reservoirs of the Vayne N. Aspinall Unit of the Colorado River Storage <br />Project. <br /> <br />Until the contract is finalized, the Bureau of Reclamation intends to <br />operate the dams to provide the river flow patterns that are expected to be <br />established by the contract. <br /> <br />jt jt jt <br /> <br />002677 <br />
