I, '\ 1
)u , J J

HIGH TDS WATER FROM NAVAJO AQUIFER
JIAS ISOTOPIC SIGNATURE OF WATER FROM
THE UPPER PALEOZOIC AQUIFER

Water samples from sites In the Navajo aquifer with a oK1Sr signature sirrular to waler from the
Upper Paleozoic aquifer generally have the highest dissolved-solids concentration relative (0
other Navajo aquifer sample sites (figure below). Si;( of the ten sites with a diswlved-solids
concentration greater than 6.500 mg/L plol within the range of oK1Sr values expected in water
from the Upper Paleozoic aquifer and a seventh and eighth sile plot close to the expected
range. The oVSr signature of these eight Navajo aquifer wells would indicate mixing wilh a
significant volume of water from the Upper Paleozoic aquifer (mean = 11,900 mgIL. number =
4). The remaining (wo sites (N25 and N40) that have a significantly lighter oll7Sr than wafer
from the Upper Paleozoic aquifer. may indicate mix.ing with an unknown source(s) of salinity.

Am'th Progress Reporl--February /995
