<br />" <br /> <br />Grand Junction Projects Office <br />Grand Junction, CO <br />Ronald Johnston (303) 248-0618 <br />For Release May 8, 1992 <br /> <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />~'" <br />, 'f.1 D~"'\..(f if <br />(;.0"" ~ ~t/' ,/ <br /> <br />. <br />-BUTeau of Reclamation <br /> <br />News Release <br /> <br />Upper Colorado Region <br /> <br />ENVIRONMENTAL SeOPING MEETINGS ANNOUNCED FOR PROPOSED CONTRACT <br />TO DELIVER WATER TO THE 8LACK CANYON OF THE GUNNISON NATIONAL MONUMENT <br /> <br />Public meetings will be held May 19-21, 1992, to receive the public's <br /> <br />initial input for the proposed contract to deliver water from the Wayne N. <br /> <br />Aspinall Unit (Unit) (Blue Mesa, Crystal, and Morrow Point Reservoirs) of the <br /> <br />Colorado River Storage Project to the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National <br /> <br />Monument (Monument). <br /> <br />The contract would guarantee a water supply for the Monument from Blue <br />Mesa Reservoir to protect the Monument's resources while allowing the Unit to <br />continue to meet its authorized purposes, including recreation, fish and <br />wildlife, water conservation and storage, and hydropower production. It is <br />expected that river flows in the Gunnison River will change as a result of the <br />contract. <br /> <br />The meetings will enable the public to identify issues and concerns they <br />have regarding this contract, and to suggest possible alternatives. <br />Alternatives suggested by the public will be considered along with <br />alternatives developed by the Bureau of Reclamation, National Park Service, <br />Bureau of Land Management, Fish and Wildlife Service, and Colorado Water <br />Conservation Board, the agencies cooperating in the development of the <br />contract. Written comments about the proposed contract will also be accepted <br />until July 15, 1992, by the Bureau of Reclamation, P.O. Box 60340, Grand <br />Junction, Colorado 81506. <br /> <br />It is necessary to attend only one of the meetings which will be held: <br /> <br />Tuesday, May 19, 1992, at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. at the Gunnison <br />County Fairgrounds, Multipurpose Room, 275 South Spruce, <br />Gunnison, Colorado; <br />Wednesday, May 20, 1992, at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. in the <br />Pavilion, 1800 Pavilion Drive, Montrose, Colorado; and <br />Thursday, May 21, 1992, at 7:30 p.m. at the Columbine Senior <br />Services_Building, 247 Meeker, Delta, Colorado. <br /> <br />-m 0 r e- <br /> <br />000971 <br />
