.

. .

UlhI3:~4

.: 10'-' ,

7. Crop prices assessment
The relation between the farmers' prices and their
costs are major.determinants of the profitability of
irrigated farming, how much farmers are willing to
spend for water, the rate of depletion of the aquifer,
the levels and projections of agricultural, productio,n",
and the expected returns to projects to develop new
water supplies for the High Plains. Clearly, the
assumptions regarding input-output price relationships
must be carefully chosen and defensible for the study
results to have credibility and worth. Furthermore,
the assumptions must be consistent. This effort must
carefully evaluate alternative sets of long-term
agricultural input-output price relations and trends
to select sets to be used by those involved in the
project.

8. Energy price and technology assessment
The cost and reliability of energy supplies are
important determinants of the quantity, of water
pumped, the irrigation technologies and water
conservation measures adopted, the overall
profitability of irrigated agriculture, and the
feasibility of any interbasin water transfer.

(

-
