\)0257~

CONTRACTOR: Geophysical Research and Development Corporation,
Denver, Colorado
CON1RACT NO. 6-07-DR-20120
PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR: John F. Henz
PERIOD: June 15, 1976, to July 31, 1978
FUNDING: FY76 - $ 2,800
T.Q. - $13 ,000
FY77 - $23,805
FY78 - $ 9,200

The contract goal was to prepare a radar echo summary of the central
HIPLEX study area including eastern Colorado, western Kansas, and
southern Nebraska. The contractor also analyzed the radar echo
survey and associated synoptic scale features to determine important
weather controls on convective cloud populations and organization in
upwind, primary, and downwind areas.

Radar echo characteristics for the study region of interest were
tabulated and analyzed to determine the number and frequency of
various size echoes, their origin, and mesoscale controls. Results
indicate that 65 percent of the echoes observed were within 12 km of
an adjacent echo. As the size of the system increased, separation
distance decreased. Convective echo bands in Colorado were observed
to be much closer to adjacent echo systems than the echo bands
observed over the Kansas plains. Mesosynoptic controls have been
processed by statistical programs and their results are currently
being analyzed.

More detailed analysis and evaluation of radar echo samples will be
required.

CONTRACTOR: I/O Transformations, Laramie, Wyoming
CONTRACT NO. 6-07-DR-20150
PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR: Paul H. Pownall
PERIOD: September 15, 1976, to March 5, 1977
FUNDING: T.Q. - $ 6,000
FY77 - $11,743

The contract purpose was to convert raw HIPLEX 1975-76 cloud physics
data collected by the Convergence Systems, Inc. aircraft into
calibrated engineering units. Most of the data were converted
reliably and are now archived in the Skywater Environmental Data
Network and are avai lable to users.

I II - 27
